Emir Ramić, Director of the Institute for the Research of Genocide, Canada, addressed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
- We are addressing you on behalf of Canadians, genocide researchers, and survivors of genocide and witnesses to the genocide in Srebrenica and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We wish to draw your attention to the election of the UN Secretary-General and the candidacy of Serbian diplomat Vuk Jeremić.
Ramić warned that Vuk Jeremić aggressively promotes the nationalist interests of Serbia, which still denies the genocide committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His statements are aimed at "equating guilt" and denying the verdicts of international courts, which were established by the United Nations. We remind you that during his presidency of the United Nations General Assembly, Vuk Jeremić was responsible for several diplomatic scandals that raised doubts among Canadians about his good intentions.
The victims of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina remember the humiliation during the brutal and shameful expulsion from UN headquarters during the address of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić.
Furthermore, Vuk Jeremić misused the General Assembly headquarters by using his presidency to host an Orthodox New Year's celebration on January 13, 2013, during which the song "Marš na Drinu" was performed. This song is a symbol of Serbian extremism, used by Nazi collaborators led by Draža Mihailović during war crimes in BiH in World War II.
During the aggression and genocide against BiH, Serbian extremists played the same song while raping, destroying, expelling, and mercilessly killing civilians in cities and concentration camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon apologized for the pain this incident caused to the victims of aggression and genocide in BiH.
Therefore, we ask you to prevent Jeremić's candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General... Send a message to everyone that such destructive actions do not pay off, that it is not worth persisting with symbols of crime and defiance of the international community, in which Canada plays an important role - stated Emir Ramić, Director of the Institute for the Research of Genocide, Canada, in his letter.
