Rockets found at Belgrade airport harmless?

Serbian authorities are investigating "Hellfire" rockets of American production, found in the luggage of an "Air Serbia" plane at Belgrade airport, a source from the State Prosecutor's Office told Reuters. Sources from Lebanese security services say the rockets posed no danger to citizens, reports the Patria News Agency.

The rockets arrived on an "Air Serbia" flight from the Lebanese capital Beirut and were supposed to be transferred to another plane, with their final destination being Portland in the American state of Oregon.

The projectiles were discovered at "Nikola Tesla" Airport on Saturday by explosive detection dogs, the source stated.

"Experts are working to determine whether the rockets had warheads or not. They were packed in appropriate crates and had documentation, which is also subject to investigation," the source from the prosecutor's office said.

A source from Lebanese security services also told Reuters that these were projectiles used by the Lebanese army for training and were being sent back to the USA.

Lebanese and American authorities were aware of this shipment, and the rockets posed no danger to citizens, the Lebanese source emphasized.

The "AGM 114 Hellfire", manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is an air-to-ground missile used to target armored vehicles and tanks, as well as for precision targeting of other objectives.

In addition to the version with a high-explosive warhead, the "Hellfire" is also produced in a training version that does not contain a warhead.

"Air Serbia" announced that it is cooperating with the investigation and that safety is its priority.

The same missile, without a warhead, mistakenly ended up in Cuba in 2014, and was recovered last month by American officials and representatives of "Lockheed Martin", the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, according to Serbian media.
