Protests across Serbia: Those who killed Sarajevo, Vukovar, Dubrovnik are back in power

(Patria) - Protests "Serbia Against Violence" were held yesterday in several Serbian cities, including Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Gornji Milanovac, Kragujevac, Niš, and Jagodina.

Residents of Novi Sad gathered last night and proceeded with their 12th protest march against violence.

They walked through two central city streets, with a banner "Students Against Violence" at the front of the column.

They were addressed by writer and Belgrade Assembly member Dejan Atanacković, as well as Ranka Kašiković, the face of the campaign "Stronger than Political Pressure".

Atanacković congratulated the Novi Sad activists on their fight to protect their city, noting that "this era is marked by people who hate cities and build fake cities because they never understood the real ones".

- These are the same ones who killed Sarajevo, who killed Vukovar, Dubrovnik, who, after losing all their shameful wars, have now changed their clothes and turned their attention to our cities as if closing a circle - said Atanacković.

At Liberty Square, Ranka Kašiković pointed out that blackmail is the way of ruling in Serbia because "fear is a powerful motivator" that forces people to surrender to authority, reports RSE.

She called on everyone to take to the streets, emphasizing that otherwise, in some future elections, it could happen again that "the intimidated and blackmailed outnumber the free citizens".

At the end of the protest, the demands, unchanged since the first protest held in May, were reiterated, while the next gathering is scheduled for September 1.

The "Serbia Against Violence" protests are being held in cities across Serbia following two mass shootings that occurred on May 3 and 4 in Belgrade and the surrounding area of Mladenovac, in which a total of 20 people, mostly children, were killed.

The protest demands have been the same for months - the dismissal of members of the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media and the management of Radio Television of Serbia.

It also calls for the closure of print media and the cancellation of programs and national frequencies for television stations that promote violence and hatred, as well as the dismissal of Minister of Internal Affairs Bratislav Gašić and the Director of the Security-Information Agency Aleksandar Vulin.
