23 years have passed since the death of Srđan Aleksić, and a street in Belgrade now bears his name

23 years ago, a group of members of the Army of Republika Srpska were checking IDs at the market in Trebinje. Among them was Bosniak Alen Glavović. They started beating and harassing him, writes the Patria News Agency.

Srđan Aleksić, himself a member of the Army of RS, could not stand by and watch his fellow citizen being beaten, so he came to his aid. Four of them then attacked Srđan with rifle butts. They beat him mercilessly. Srđan fell into a coma due to his injuries and never woke up. He died on January 27, 1993. He was 27 years old.

His father Rade wrote in the obituary:

- He died fulfilling his human duty.

One of the attackers on Srđan was killed during the war, while the others were sentenced to 28 months in prison.

Alen Glavović now lives in Sweden, is married and has two children. Every year he visits Trebinje, Srđan's grave, and his father.

Srđan Aleksić was posthumously awarded the Charter of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fifteen years after Srđan's death, Velikih drveta street in Sarajevo was renamed after him.

The justification stated:

- Without people like Srđan Aleksić and their heroic deeds, humanity would lose hope, and without it, our lives would be meaningless.

A passage in Zmaj-Jovina street in Novi Sad was named after Srđan, and a memorial plaque was placed there in his honor. There is also a passage in Pančevo that bears Srđan Aleksić's name.

In 2007, RTS (Radio Television of Serbia) filmed and broadcast a documentary film about Srđan Aleksić. The film is titled 'SRĐO'.

On December 28, 2008, the Trebinje theater Slovo performed a memorial performance "Epilogue" which spoke about the life of Srđan Aleksić. Srđan was a member of this theater during his lifetime. The play was directed by Predrag Ćurić, and the role of Srđan was played by the young Serbian actor Al Droubi Kristian.

On the Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia, February 15, 2012, Srđan Aleksić was posthumously awarded the golden medal Miloš Obilić for displayed courage and an act of personal heroism, because in 1993, as a Serb from Trebinje, he stood up to protect his Bosniak neighbor from his compatriots.

A plaque with Srđan Aleksić's name will be placed today in Belgrade in the part of the street that will be named after him. The placement will be attended by members of the Belgrade City Council Aleksandar Marković, Stevo Marušić, and Dragomir Petronijević, the secretary of the Secretariat for Communal and Housing Affairs Nina Jandrić, and the author of the documentary film "Srđo", RTS journalist Sanja Dragićević, who will address the attendees on this occasion.
