Former Croatian Finance Minister Ivan Šuker passes away

(Patria) - Former Deputy Prime Minister and long-time Croatian Finance Minister Ivan Šuker has passed away at the age of 66.

He began his political career in 1990 when he became a member of the Executive Council of the Municipality of Velika Gorica and head of the Velika Gorica branch of the Tax Administration.

At the beginning of the Homeland War, Šuker was the head of the Crisis Headquarters in Velika Gorica, and from 1993 to 1997, he was an external member of the Zagreb City Government. From 1997 to 2000, he served as Deputy Prefect of Zagreb County.

He was first elected to the Parliament in the general elections held in January 2000.

In the same year, he became the head of the HDZ in Velika Gorica and the mayor of Velika Gorica.

From the mayoral office, he moved to the Government in 2003 after newly elected Prime Minister Ivo Sanader appointed him as the Minister of Finance.

He held this position for a record seven years, until December 2010, when Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor thanked him for his cooperation.

Martina Dalić succeeded him at the Ministry of Finance, and Šuker moved to parliamentary seats.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament six times, and his last parliamentary term ended in July 2020.
