Dragoslav Kosmajac was arrested this morning at his home in Belgrade, announced the Minister of Internal Affairs Nebojša Stefanović, according to Belgrade media, reports the BH. news agency Patria.
In the police operation, seven accomplices of Dragoslav Kosmajac were also arrested, four in Sremska Mitrovica, and the rest in Belgrade. The criminal offenses they are charged with range from incitement to commit criminal offenses to tax evasion.
According to Minister Stefanović, the working group was formed on June 25 and the investigation was conducted in five directions.
- We worked very thoroughly and carefully to gather enough evidence for the assets to be confiscated - stated Stefanović and thanked all countries within Interpol as well as the working group in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Given the severity of the criminal offenses for which Kosmajac is suspected, Stefanović expects him to be remanded in custody.
According to Stefanović, Kosmajac was assigned a lawyer ex officio, as his defense attorney is on strike.
Stefanović said that none of Kosmajac's family members were arrested. When asked about the potential sentence for the offenses Kosmajac and his associates are suspected of, Stefanović said that it is the Prosecutor's Office's decision, but that he expects that, given that he has been convicted before, he will not receive the minimum sentence.
- We focused on what we can prove immediately, in terms of assets he possesses for which there is no origin, and tax returns. Then opportunities for further action open up - said Stefanović.
He compared this case to the FBI investigation and the arrest of Al Capone, reminding that he too "fell" for tax evasion.
- This is the first step and we are guided by the law, and everything else will follow - said Stefanović, who reiterated that this is another proof that there are no untouchables in Serbia.
- There are no untouchables, there is no one we are afraid of, and this country will deal with everyone who breaks the law - said the Minister of Internal Affairs.
A few months ago, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić identified Dragoslav Kosmajac (61) as the biggest drug dealer in Serbia.
