New Croatian Words: Prestrujnik, Šećerice and Bakroza

(Patria) - At this year's competition for the best new Croatian word "Dr. Ivan Šreter", the words prestrujnik, šećerice and bakroza won. The competition for the best Croatian word is organized by the magazine Jezik, with the support of the "Dr. Ivan Šreter" Foundation. The chairwoman of the Selection Committee is Sanda Ham, and the ceremonial award ceremony for the "Dr. Ivan Šreter" award was held in Lipik as part of the celebration of the Croatian Language Day.

The first prize was won by the word - prestrujnik, proposed by Tomislav Meštrović and Ognjen Ožegić.

For adapter, there are several Croatian words: pretvarač, pretvornik, prilagodnik, however, there are at least ten different types of adapters that have nothing to do with electricity, the Evaluation Committee pointed out. Adapters for electricity (the small ones for mobile phones, tablets and computers) are either called adapters or power adapters, so 'prestrujnik' is a necessary word because it narrows down the concept and defines it precisely, and it is morphologically and usage-wise more convenient because it is a single word, the Committee adds.

The second prize was won by the word - šećerice, proposed by Leonard Štrac and Izabela Štrac.

Alongside žitarice (cereals) and uljarice (oilseeds), we would also have a common name for sugar beet, sugar cane, and possibly sweet corn, i.e., corn from which corn syrup is made, the Committee stated. They note that biology experts and the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek consider the word meaningful and that there is a need for it.

The third prize was won by the word bakroza as a replacement for Wilson's disease, proposed by Marko Bukna and Martina Pehar.

Hepatolenticular degeneration or Wilson's disease is the name for a disease in which copper accumulates in tissue. According to the chemical element beryllium, the disease is called berylliosis, the Committee notes and adds that the new word 'bakroza' for the old disease fits into the system.

The first prize comes with a monetary award of 600 euros, the second 400, and the third 200 euros.
