SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The District Court in Berlin today sentenced a 62-year-old man from Brandenburg to a fine of 3200 euros for damaging the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.
"The convicted is considered guilty of causing material damage and for disrespecting and disturbing the dead," the court's explanation states.
The convicted, who did not appear before the court and therefore a warrant was issued for his arrest, damaged a concrete block with a hammer in April 2020, which is part of the memorial to European Jews killed during National Socialism.
The Holocaust memorial, unveiled in 2005 in memory of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis, consists of about 2700 smaller or larger dark gray concrete blocks.
The lawyer of the convicted said that his client did not damage the memorial out of ideological motives. During the trial, the possibility of a mental illness of the 62-year-old was mentioned several times.
The Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar is continuously being devastated, but no one has ever been punished so severely, which would be a lesson for the future.
