Storm hits Rijeka, Opatija, Zagreb

(Patria) - The announced weather change has arrived in Croatia. A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds hit the Rijeka area. Heavy rain fell, and many roads were under water. The State Hydrometeorological Institute issued an orange warning for the Rijeka region.

A thunderstorm with heavy rain hit the wider Rijeka area on Sunday morning, flooding streets, a roof caught fire due to a lightning strike, and reports of fallen trees are coming in. The storm arrived around 6 a.m., and due to large amounts of rain in a short time, Rijeka's streets flooded, causing traffic problems.

After the storm, sunny weather returned to Rijeka. According to the Rijeka Public Fire Department, they carried out four interventions in the Rijeka area after the storm. In Zamet, they extinguished a roof fire caused by a lightning strike, while the rest were minor interventions.

In the areas of Crikvenica and Opatija, trees fell and were being removed in the morning, firefighters report. According to a report from citizens to the County Center 112, the wind blew away an inflatable boat near Šilo on Krk.

The State Hydrometeorological Institute reported at 8 a.m. on Sunday that in the past 24 hours, 39 liters of rain per square meter fell in Rijeka, and 55 liters at Rijeka Airport on Krk.
