Severe Weather Across Europe: Streets Flooded, Hail the Size of Eggs

(Patria) - Heavy rain and rising river and stream levels have caused major problems in Tyrol. The districts of Imst and Innsbruck-Land are currently the most affected. Roads and railway lines have been closed due to floods and landslides. 2500 firefighters are engaged in flood relief in Tyrol. The situation in the Imst district is particularly difficult. According to estimates, the Ötztaler Ache river level is expected to rise again there, writes Kronen Zeitung.

30 households with about 70 people have been evacuated in Tumpen (Ried district) in the Ötztal valley. They have been accommodated in the local community center and fire station. In the well-known winter sports resort of Sölden, all bridges have been closed as a precaution. Three houses were also evacuated in Jerzens. Power outages have also occurred in the area.

The railway line between Gries am Brenner and Brenner is closed. A local road has been damaged by floods and is also closed.

Currently, the most storm-affected area in Slovenia is Koper, where streets have been flooded and residents report power outages.

The strongest gust of wind reached a speed of 113 km/h in Debeli Rtič, and 85 km/h in Koper. The severe weather then moved towards the Vipava Valley and Goriška. In Ajdovščina and Štanjel, hail the size of eggs has already fallen.

Severe storms have also hit Bavaria; in the town of Bad Bayersoien, the wind has torn roofs off houses. Meanwhile, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, more than 350 millimeters of rain have fallen in the last 72 hours. Heavier rainfall is predicted today mainly for Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, and Carinthia, where rain is already falling in some places. The GeoSphere Austria meteorological office warns of the possibility of landslides and floods.

According to forecasts, the rain will continue in most of the country until Tuesday. Between 60 and 100 millimeters of precipitation could fall, and in some places, 150 to 200 millimeters, especially in the central Alps. In the Austrian regions of Styria and Carinthia, intermittent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected. Precipitation is expected to cease everywhere on Wednesday. Thursday is expected to be partly sunny, although isolated showers are still possible.
