Nenad Čanak: Serbia must not provide guarantee for Ratko Mladić's temporary release

The League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina called on the Government of the Republic of Serbia not to, under any circumstances, request the temporary release of Hague indictee Ratko Mladić, writes Patria agency.

As is known, the indictment of the Tribunal for War Crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia charges Mladić with genocide, persecution on political, religious and national grounds, extermination as a crime against humanity, deportations, taking hostages, and other inhumane acts.

Mladić was one of the most wanted fugitives on Interpol's wanted list for fourteen years, and was only arrested in May 2011 in the vicinity of Zrenjanin.

Serbia has faced numerous problems related to Mladić's hiding for years.

- The wars of the nineties brought to light mass crimes against humanity and represent a dark page in the history of the Balkan peoples. The trial of war crimes indictees is an opportunity for entire nations and states to confront the crimes, which were often committed in their name.

Any guarantee for the temporary release of Ratko Mladić, which would be given by the Serbian authorities, would represent a malevolent gesture, which would cause great damage to Serbia's international position and significantly disrupt relations between our country and neighboring countries - said LSV leader Nenad Čanak.
