Lajčak after meeting with Vučić: Both sides must work on de-escalation and normalization of relations

(Patria) - The European Union's Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Miroslav Lajčak, stated after the meeting of the Quint representatives with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić that the topic of the visit was progress in the implementation of the normalization agreement and de-escalation of the situation in Kosovo.

"We want to clearly state that we strongly condemn the attack on the Kosovo police on September 24. All perpetrators of the attack must be brought to justice, and we expect full cooperation from Serbia in this regard," Lajčak said after the meeting.

He added that leaders have a responsibility to their citizens and that both Belgrade and Pristina must work on de-escalation and normalization of relations.

"We conveyed this message to President Vučić. Serbia and Kosovo entered into new agreements in February and March of this year, and we expect both sides to start fulfilling their obligations from both new and old agreements," said Lajčak.

He emphasized that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue will be on the agenda of the meeting of the foreign ministers of European countries on Monday, and that EU leaders will also discuss it later next week, at the European Council.

"This visit will directly affect these discussions. As we have said many times, there is no European future for either Serbia or Kosovo without the normalization of their relations and the implementation of adopted normalization agreements, both current and earlier ones. We want to see a stable, prosperous, and European Western Balkan region, and that is why dialogue is of crucial importance. Our talks with President Vučić and Prime Minister Albin Kurti will continue in the coming days," Lajčak concluded.

After the meeting, Vučić also briefly commented, stating that he had a difficult meeting with the Quint.

"I believe that in the coming period, we will find a way out of the crisis. In the coming days, I expect important meetings in Brussels," Vučić said on Instagram.
