In Zvečan, Leposavić, and Zubin Potok, local Serbs are protesting against the new Albanian mayors, elected on April 23. Tensions in northern Kosovo rose on May 26 when the mayors of these three municipalities, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings.
The international community condemned this action by Kosovo and called on the Kosovo government to avoid "violent entry into municipal buildings.".
The new mayors were elected after the municipal leaders from Lista Srbija – the main party of Serbs in Kosovo – resigned in November last year. Lista Srbija left all Kosovo institutions due to the decision of the Kosovo Government to implement the re-registration process for vehicles with license plates issued in Serbia.
The elections were boycotted by the majority Serb population in the area, who now do not accept the election results, i.e., the new mayors.
