(Patria) - Mayor of Belgrade Aleksandar Šapić resigned from his position today, confirmed for Nova.rs.
Following a wave of resignations by mayors and municipal presidents across Serbia, the first man of Belgrade also submitted his resignation.
This means that early Belgrade elections will be held, as announced by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić during a recent appearance on RTS.
"I have just submitted a formal resignation from the position of Mayor of Belgrade, in order to start creating the legal conditions for holding elections that, in addition to parliamentary and provincial ones, would be held on December 17 at the level of Belgrade as well," Šapić stated.
That the elections will be soon and very likely on December 17 was also said by Šapić himself. He then announced what his further steps would be.
- If the elections are on December 17, if that is the final agreement, you will know in a few days. There are precise legal procedures that condition that decision.
In a few days you will have information if we agree that the final date is December 17. And it will very likely be, and in a few days you will know what steps we will have to take to hold the elections on December 17 - Šapić said.
