SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Citizens of Kosovo should receive a visa-free regime for the EU, after members of the European Parliament today supported the European Commission's proposal to ask member states for visa liberalisation for the only Western Balkan country whose citizens must wait in line for visas.
The European Commission's proposal was passed with 331 votes in favour, 126 against and 12 abstentions.
The European Parliament's rapporteur on visa liberalisation for Kosovo citizens, Tanja Fajon, said that "EU member states are blocking a small country without real reasons."
Fajon also said that Kosovo has met all conditions for visa abolition.
After the abolition of visas for citizens of North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia in 2009, and for Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2010, Kosovo is the only Western Balkan country whose citizens still need visas to travel to the EU.
The dialogue on visa liberalisation with Kosovo was launched in 2012.
