EU demands Montenegro annul the Law on the President

(Patria) - The European Union (EU) has called on all political actors in Montenegro to urgently take action to ensure the functioning of the Constitutional Court and annul the amendments to the Law on the President.

European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero emphasised that it is of vital importance that everyone in Montenegro exercise maximum restraint and refrain from further provocative actions.

She noted that Montenegro missed yet another opportunity to appoint members of the Constitutional Court and end the institutional crisis.

„A fully functional Constitutional Court composed of competent members is key for Montenegro to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens and to progress on its European path,“ she stated in a post on Twitter.

The Embassy of the United States of America called for an urgent return to a peaceful and constructive discourse.

„We call on all Montenegrin leaders and citizens to continue dialogue and find peaceful solutions to political problems,“ they wrote on their Twitter account.

Citizens who had been protesting since morning over the re-enactment of the amendments to the Law on the President have dispersed, and it is calm in front of the Parliament after this evening's incidents when demonstrators broke through a metal fence and police used tear gas after the parliament building was pelted with torches and bottles.

The protest organisers announced that they will block roads across Montenegro tomorrow and hold a large rally in Podgorica on Saturday.
