(Patria) - Deputy State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel and EU High Representative Spokesperson Nabila Masrali issued a statement regarding the events in northern Kosovo.
"The European Union and the United States are concerned about the continued tense situation in northern Kosovo. We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, to urgently take measures for unconditional de-escalation of the situation, and to refrain from provocations, threats, and intimidation. We are working with President Vučić and Prime Minister Kurti to find a political solution to calm tensions and agree on a way forward in the interest of stability, security, and prosperity of all local communities," the statement reads.
They note that they welcome the assurances of Kosovo's leadership that there are no lists of Kosovo Serbs who will be arrested or prosecuted for peaceful protests and barricades.
"At the same time, the rule of law must be respected, and any form of violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The United States will support the work of the European Union through EULEX. EULEX will, in accordance with its mandate, continue to closely monitor all investigations and subsequent proceedings to promote respect for human rights. This includes, in particular, guarantees of a fair trial, as well as protection and equal treatment for members of non-majority communities in Kosovo," the statement reads.
It also expressed the expectation that Kosovo and Serbia will return to fostering an environment conducive to reconciliation, regional stability, and cooperation for the benefit of their citizens.
"All dialogue obligations must be fully implemented without delay," it was stated.
