The US is grateful to Serbia for offering a humanitarian transfer of two detainees from the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba," the State Department stated.
The US Department of Defense announced today the transfer of Tajikistani national Muhamadi Davlatov and Yemeni citizen Mansur Ahmad Saad al-Dafi, according to the statement.
The US, it is added, greatly appreciates Serbia's generous assistance as the US continues its efforts to close the detention facility at Guantanamo.
This significant humanitarian gesture is in line with Serbia's leadership role on the global stage, the State Department stated.
The State Department also noted that each transfer was unanimously approved by US government departments and agencies, and that Serbia has joined a group of 30 countries that have provided transfer options for over 100 detainees since 2009.
The US Department of Defense stated in a separate announcement that the US coordinated with the Serbian government to ensure the transfer complied with security measures and humane treatment of detainees, according to Tanjug's report.
