Second round of presidential elections: Will a woman lead Slovenia?

(Patria) - The second round of presidential elections will be held in Slovenia on Sunday, with voters choosing between conservative Anže Logar and independent candidate Nataša Pirc Musar, who has the support of the left.

Voting will take place from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM at more than 3,000 polling stations across the country.

Logar (46) is a former Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and a candidate of Janez Janša's opposition SDS party, while Musar (54) is a former journalist and lawyer specializing in personal data protection.

In the first round, Logar won 33.96 percent of the votes, and Musar won 26.85 percent.

A poll by the newspaper Mladina shows that Musar is supported by sympathizers of all three parties of the ruling coalition – the Freedom Movement, the Social Democrats, and the Left – as well as those who cannot decide which party to support.

Analysts believe her success will depend on how many left-wing voters she can motivate to turn out, given the traditionally more disciplined right-wing electorate. Logar, supported by sympathizers of the right-wing parties SDS and New Slovenia, would accordingly benefit from a slightly lower turnout.

Both candidates support Croatia's entry into the Schengen area, as well as the implementation of the Arbitration Court's decision on the border, which they consider valid, while Croatia considers it "contaminated" due to the involvement of a Slovenian judge in the process.

These presidential elections are the seventh in the history of Slovenia as an independent state.

Milan Kučan served two five-year terms as President of Slovenia, followed by Janez Drnovšek and Danilo Türk, and then Borut Pahor for two terms, whose second term officially ends in December.
