(Patria) - The Parliament of Montenegro today elected three of the four missing judges of the Constitutional Court, thereby unblocking the highest judicial institution after five months.
Elected as Constitutional Court judges were Snežana Armenko, Dragana Đuranović and Momirka Tešić. The election of the new judges was supported by more than two-thirds of deputies from both the government and the opposition.
Consensus among the largest parties was reached earlier following strong pressure from the United States and the European Union, which threatened to halt Montenegro's EU accession process.
The term of the elected Constitutional Court judges is 12 years.
The Constitutional Court had been blocked since September last year because it had only three of the total seven judges, preventing it from ruling on constitutional appeals, reports RSE. Without decisions from this court, electoral processes cannot be concluded.
