Čanak: The Western Balkans is the next place where the fire of war will ignite

(Patria) - Nenad Čanak, a member of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, analyzed the current situation in the world, the region, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The war in Gaza is incomparably more destructive and with incomparably more civilian casualties than, for example, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, only a few countries express solidarity with the Palestinians.

"The problem of that area is extremely complex. The worst thing you can do today is ask someone if they are for the Palestinians or the Israelis. My heart breaks when I see all the horrors happening to civilians in the Gaza Strip. When I look at the Hamas fighters, I saw that they don't wear uniforms. A uniform is important to distinguish oneself from civilians. A band around the arm or head is enough. This is a horror that must be resolved politically. That political path there is thorny. In Israel, as in any other country, there are extremists who would kill two million people if necessary. When you have those who want to exterminate all of Israel, claiming that Israel has occupied Palestine, neither stance offers a chance to stop the crimes," Čanak told Hayat.

Čanak also touched upon the danger of the war spreading to the region, and whether there is a danger of a global war. He emphasizes that this is the most terrible thing, reports Slobodna Bosna.

"The war in the former Yugoslavia was a terribly paid price, primarily due to Slobodan Milošević's Greater Serbian nationalism, which continued the idea of 'Greater Serbia'. So, it was terrible, but it did not threaten to spill beyond the borders of the SFRY. It was contained, and that's why the interventions that should have been carried out back in 1991 to prevent the hell of Bosnia and Herzegovina did not happen. That was not done. When the war in Ukraine began, the international community watched silently, thinking 'well, it happened'. Such things continue. The war in Ukraine is a war concerning the survival of European civilization. Russia's handwriting is completely clear, instigating wars wherever it can to reduce aid to Ukraine. The pressure to pay more attention to Israel and less to Ukraine will put Putin in a better position. The next point where a problem will occur is called the Western Balkans. Zelensky has spoken clearly about this. The next place where the fire of war will ignite is the Western Balkans," says Čanak.

The election campaign in Serbia, as usual, is reflected in the countries of the region. Serbia and Croatia have expelled one diplomat each from the other and have escalated relations, and the president of the BiH entity RS, Milorad Dodik, has stated that he will support Aleksandar Vučić, even though Vučić has not supported him.

"Nothing has changed. We knew that Dodik is a Russian agent who is doing all this to protect his property acquired through the plunder of BiH citizens. That is completely clear. I have no doubt that corrupt practices exist in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. All of this needs to be brought to justice; the international community is fed up with both Serbia and Kosovo," Čanak points out.
