(Patria) - Senior advisor to US President Joseph Biden expressed concern over the events in northern Kosovo in talks with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, the White House announced, Reuters reported.
On Thursday, Biden's Deputy National Security Advisor, Jon Finer, spoke with Kurti and called on Kosovo to "allow the newly elected mayors to carry out their duties from alternative locations and to withdraw police forces from municipal buildings," the White House said. He also welcomed "Kurti's willingness to work on creating conditions for new elections," it stated.
Biden's aide spoke with Vučić on Friday and advocated for Serbia to "withdraw its armed forces stationed near the border and reduce their readiness, as well as to call on protesters to remain calm in northern Kosovo," according to the US summary of the call.
In both calls, the White House said Finer expressed concern about the situation and urged all parties to de-escalate the conflict. Washington also expected both sides to re-engage in the European Union-facilitated dialogue and to "fully implement the normalization agreement" reached earlier this year.
