(Patria) - US Ambassador to Belgrade Christopher R. Hill stated today that he "wishes Serbia would understand and recognize that Kosovo is an independent state".
However, Hill is aware that the problem is much more complex than that.
On the second day of the Belgrade Security Conference (BSC), Hill said it is extremely important to understand what happened on September 24 during the armed attack by Serbs in Banjska, Kosovo.
- As the first step towards solving the problem, we must hold those responsible for what happened truly accountable, so that it does not happen again - the US ambassador said at the panel "Western Balkans in Global (Dis)order".
He stated that the second step would be to calm the situation in northern Kosovo, and then to find a political solution.
- It is important that the US and the EU, with joint efforts, try to solve the problems of the Western Balkans. Kosovo remains a very difficult problem for a reason.
People say that Serbia simply needs to understand that Kosovo is an independent state, get over it, and move on.
And I wish it would do that, but the fact is that the problem is much more complex - Hill added.
