BELGRADE, (Patria) - The Youth Initiative for Human Rights held a commemorative gathering tonight in the park near the Presidency of Serbia in Belgrade for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
The gathering was attended by US Ambassador Kyle Scott, Norwegian Ambassador Arne Sannes Bjornstad, German Ambassador Thomas Schieb, Italian Ambassador Carlo Lo Cascio, representatives of several organizations, and public figures.
Representatives of the Youth Initiative unfurled a banner in the park reading "Too young to remember, determined never to forget," Beta reported.
Marko Milosavljević from the Youth Initiative said that the atmosphere of noise, uproar, and disrespect for human life and dignity towards the victims was produced by the denial of genocide and the relativization of crimes in Srebrenica.
"Despite that, we gathered to show a policy that respects human losses. Unfortunately, we are witnesses that we are the only country in the world responsible for not preventing genocide, even though it knew it would happen. That is why for years there have been people ready to step forward from this noise and shouting and say we are sorry for those human losses," Milosavljević said.
He called on the authorities in Serbia to recognize the genocide and the human dignity of the victims, emphasizing that from this would be born "a new face of the country."
N1 reports that about twenty people in shirts with nationalist symbols and outlines of Kosovo disrupted a performance of "Srebrenica - When We the Dead Rise" at the Kolarac Foundation in Belgrade, organized by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights. After a verbal confrontation with the director and actors, police escorted them out.
