(Patria) – Albania has sent 30 doctors and nurses to Italy to help the local medical staff who have been exhausted for a long time in the months-long fight against the coronavirus epidemic.
The medical team was seen off at the airport by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, as he announced on his Facebook page.
- Today we are all Italians. Italy will win this battle, he said briefly at the airport.
Albania has temporarily brought back about 2,000 retired doctors to work to help the health system fighting the epidemic.
The country is generally struggling with a shortage of doctors, with only 1.2 doctors per 1,000 citizens, while in Italy the ratio is 4.1 per 1,000.
In Albania, which has a population of 2.8 million, 200 have been infected with the virus and 10 have died.
Albanian medical workers will be paid by the Albanian government.
A large Albanian community of about 400,000 people lives in Italy, Euronews reports.
