(Patria) - Ukraine launched at least 25 drones early this morning targeting Moscow, marking the largest Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian capital to date. Due to the attack, two airports in Moscow were temporarily closed.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that 12 drones were destroyed in the Ramenskoye and Kolomenskoye districts of the Moscow region, as well as in the city of Domodedovo, southwest of Moscow.
The Moscow region is home to more than 21 million inhabitants.
"According to preliminary information, there is no damage or casualties at the site of the debris fall," Sobyanin said on the messaging app Telegram.
"Emergency services are on site," he added.
The Ramenskoye district, 45 km southeast of the Kremlin, was last targeted in September, during what was then the largest Ukrainian attack on the Russian capital, when Russian air defenses destroyed 20 drones.
Rosaviacia, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, said on Telegram that "for the safety of civilian aircraft flights, temporary restrictions have been introduced for the operation of Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports".
Ukrainian drones set fire to several non-residential buildings in the Russian regions of Kaluga and Bryansk during the night, regional governors said on Sunday. The Ministry of Defense said that air defense units destroyed 23 Ukrainian drones during the night, including 17 over Bryansk.
However, footage on social media suggests that fires are burning in several places, and some fires are quite large.
Vladislav Shapsha, governor of the Kaluga region, which borders the Moscow region to the northeast, said that a non-residential building in the region was burning as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack.
Kyiv says its drone attacks on Russian territory are aimed at infrastructure crucial to Moscow's war effort and are a response to Russia's continuous attacks on Ukrainian territory.
