Black box of plane that crashed in Brazil found: It fell from 5,000 m altitude in one minute

(Patria) - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared three days of mourning after the plane crash in which at least 61 people died. Investigators found the black box, and bodies were being recovered until late at night.

It was also announced that all passengers were Brazilian citizens.

A medical team worked on identifying the victims, and the families of the deceased are expected to be officially notified soon. The bodies of the victims will be transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Campinas.

Voepass Linhas Aéreas revised the death toll to 61 people – 57 passengers and 4 crew members.

The Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency announced on Friday that the crashed plane and its crew were airworthy.

The plane operated by Voepass that crashed near the city of Vinhedo was an “ATR-72, manufactured in 2010 and in good operational condition, with valid registration and airworthiness certificates. There were four crew members on board at the time of the accident, and all were properly licensed and qualified”, the statement said, CNN reports.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and multiple agencies are involved in the investigation.

CNN published aerial footage showing the wreckage in the immediate vicinity of a house in Vinhedo – a residential area in the western part of São Paulo.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows that the plane fell from approximately 17,000 feet (over 5,000m) in just one minute. An eyewitness told Reuters that the plane crashed onto the roof of an elderly couple's house.

Aerial footage shows the nose of the plane and the cockpit windows. Behind it, burnt wreckage of the plane litters the ground, and the tail is visible on several trees.
