In Sarajevo, Mensad Bašić, recipient of the Golden Lily, was bid farewell with the highest honors

(Patria) – In Sarajevo today, in the presence of family, comrades-in-arms, friends, and numerous citizens, the funeral and burial of Mensad Bašić, recipient of the highest wartime award "Golden Lily", took place. He was buried with the highest military and social honors, as befits one of the bravest sons of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bašić (Velija) Mensad was born on June 6, 1961, in Kamenica, municipality of Pale. He was a mechanical engineer by profession, and a fighter, patriot, and man of exceptional organizational skills by spirit.

Upon the outbreak of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he immediately placed himself at the disposal of his homeland, joining the ranks of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. From April 1992 to July 1995, he was the commander of the 5th Battalion of the 1st Drina Mountain Brigade, and then the chief of staff of the 801st Light Brigade.

He particularly distinguished himself in the defense of Orahovica and Goražde – cities that, thanks to people like him, survived despite all enemy attempts to break them.

For his bravery, determination, and immeasurable contribution to the defense of the homeland, he was awarded the "Golden Lily" in 1995, a symbol of honor and heroism.

After the war, he continued his life in Sarajevo, where he worked as a long-time employee of the public company GRAS, leaving a deep mark among his colleagues there as well.

Mensad Bašić will be remembered as a commander, comrade-in-arms, colleague, and friend – as a man who testified with his life to his love for his homeland and people.

May he rest in eternal peace and may he be thanked.
