(Patria) - The Serbian Orthodox Church /SPC/ and believers are celebrating Christmas today, the happiest Christian holiday - the day of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas is a holiday with many customs and its celebration begins with attending the morning liturgy, where believers who have fasted the Christmas fast approach the Holy Sacrament of Communion.
After the liturgy, the household members gather around the Christmas table, pray, and then, singing the troparion "Roždestvo tvoje Hriste Bože naš" (Your birth, Christ our God), turn and break the česnica - a bread into which a coin has been placed.
It is believed that the one whose piece of the česnica contains the coin will have a particularly happy year.
Christmas is a family holiday; visits are not made on this day, with the exception of the polaznik or položajnik - a male baptized person who comes to the home of the celebrant and is the first to congratulate on Christmas.
Christmas is celebrated for three days, and believers greet each other with "Mir Božiji - Hristos se rodi" (Peace of God - Christ is born), with the response "Vaistinu se rodi" (Truly He is born).
Besides the Serbian Orthodox Church, Christmas on January 7th is celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Mount Athos, Old Calendarists in Greece, and Egyptian Copts, who follow the Julian calendar for their divine services.
Christmas is among the three greatest Christian holidays.
