Graffiti in Grbavica: Goran Čengić Hall

A graffiti "Goran Čengić Hall" appeared this morning on the sports hall in Grbavica, municipality of Novo Sarajevo.

This is the result of citizens' revolt against the decision of the Novo Sarajevo Municipal Council to name the sports hall in Grbavica after this municipality. With a total of 17 votes "for", 12 "against", and one abstention, the decision was made to name it "Novo Sarajevo".

Councilors from Naša stranka, SDP, Građanski savez, and Demokratska fronta opposed this naming, as their proposal was to name it "Goran Čengić".

As stated in the press release of the Municipal Organization SDP Novo Sarajevo, although the municipal mayor Nedžad Koldžo promised back in 2008 that the hall would bear the name Goran Čengić, the councilors of his party and "their satellites" decided differently at yesterday's session.

- Although they have no sensible justification for rejecting the naming of the hall after Goran Čengić, it is evident that SDA, with its omnipresent rewriting of history, is shaping the city of Sarajevo to its own measure, thereby disregarding the feelings of other citizens of our city. Along with naming a school after the proven fascist Mustafa Busuladžić, yesterday's move by SDA and other parties is just a continuation of the policy of denial and minimization of heroes who gave their lives for this city - the statement reads.
