Zagreb police determine woman falsely reported attack and stabbed herself, charges to be filed against her

(Patria) - Zagreb police conducted an extensive criminal investigation to establish all facts and circumstances of a woman's injury in Zagreb, who reported being attacked by an unknown man.

Police officers of the Zagreb Police Department, immediately upon learning of the injury on November 28, 2025, interviewed several people and carried out a series of measures and actions within their jurisdiction to resolve the circumstances of the injury.

"Yesterday, December 1, 2025, after being discharged from the hospital, the 35-year-old woman filed a criminal complaint against an unknown perpetrator for attempted aggravated assault. In her report, she stated to police officers that an unknown perpetrator approached her and injured her with a knife, after which she sought medical attention at a hospital in Zagreb. After receiving medical assistance, she was found to have minor injuries.

During the further criminal investigation, after gathering operational information that indicated the report might be untrue, police officers continued with intensive checks and determined that the woman had falsely reported a crime in order to mislead the police, even though she was aware that she was committing a crime by falsely reporting it. The investigation determined that she had inflicted the injury on herself with a knife she had previously purchased in a store in Zagreb, which was confirmed during the proceedings.

Given the findings, police officers will file a criminal complaint against the 35-year-old woman through regular channels with the competent Municipal Public Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of committing the crime of false reporting of a crime under Article 304, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code," stated the Zagreb police.

After it was determined that it was self-inflicted injury, police officers called emergency medical services from the Zagreb City Institute for Emergency Medicine. Based on the doctor's decision, the 35-year-old woman was transported to an appropriate healthcare facility to receive the necessary medical care.

The police specifically note that unverified and inaccurate claims about an attack by an unknown man on a nun were published in some media outlets, and that these claims were proven false by the criminal investigation.

"As the elements of a crime committed against the 35-year-old woman were not met in this specific case, we hereby completely deny such claims by certain media outlets," the police announced.
