Dalmatia experiences storm-force southerly winds up to 110 kilometers per hour

(Patria) - Storm-force southerly winds in Dalmatia occasionally reached speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour last night and on Thursday morning, with large waves at sea making navigation difficult and many ferry lines suspended, reported the Maritime Meteorological Center in Split.

"Locally, storm-force southerly winds in the open sea off central Dalmatia created waves up to five meters high," Robert Turčinović, the duty meteorologist at the Center, told Hina. The Center therefore issued warnings to sailors and shipowners about the deteriorating sea conditions. However, a reduction in southerly winds is expected in the late afternoon and evening, Turčinović added.

Due to the strengthened southerly winds, catamaran lines from the islands to Split and the ferry lines Sumartin-Makarska and Sućuraj-Drvenik are suspended, said the Jadrolinija office for the Split shipping area.

The fast road Split-Klis has been closed to trucks and buses since this morning due to strong winds, reported the Split police.

In the Split hospital complex at Križine today, strong winds broke a branch from a tree, which fell to the ground. Firefighters quickly removed it, it was learned from the fire operational center in Split. There was no material damage.
