(Patria) - Following a fatal attack on a 48-year-old man in Novo Mesto, the Slovenian government held an emergency meeting where measures to improve the security situation were agreed upon.
State Secretary for National and International Security Vojko Volk emphasized that immediate action is necessary to restore citizens' confidence in security, writes the portal Delo.
- These proposals aim to react immediately and show that we want to establish control over the situation, which will restore people's confidence in their safety, and that we will do everything within the existing legislation at the expert and law enforcement level.
And that, in the medium term, experts and politicians will do as soon as possible what has become an explicit necessity after yesterday's event - Volk said.
The Council for National Security proposed a significant strengthening of the Novo Mesto Police Administration with officers from other units, and if necessary, the special police unit will also be engaged.
Volk also announced the establishment of a coordination group that will direct the work on the ground, and this role will be temporarily taken over by the operational group of the secretariat he leads.
- We will meet every week and provide guidelines for the future - he added.
Chief State Prosecutor Katarina Bergant stated that the State Prosecutor's Office, after noticing the deterioration of the situation related to the Roma community, has tightened its penal policy, especially in cases of repeat offenders and violent crimes.
She emphasized that they can only act within the framework of existing legislation. In a statement, she stated that they are shocked by Saturday's attack, which they condemn in the strongest terms, and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
- In this specific case, the Prosecutor's Office acted in accordance with its powers and took all necessary measures permitted by law - Bergant stated.
Prime Minister Robert Golob announced that in the coming days and weeks, a package of legislative amendments will be prepared with the aim of a more effective response to the worsened security conditions, both in Novo Mesto and elsewhere in the country.
President of the Supreme Court Miodrag Đorđević stated that the judiciary is "the last in line" and that well-functioning and effective legislation, police, and prosecution are needed to resolve such cases. When asked about the responsibility of the judiciary, he replied that it would be difficult to talk about it.
Let us remind you, the political reaction came after the tragic event on the night between Friday and Saturday, when a 48-year-old man went to pick up his son in front of a bar in Novo Mesto because he was allegedly threatened by a group of Roma. They then attacked and beat the father, who later died in the hospital from his injuries.
