Commemoration on the 79th anniversary of the breakout of Jasenovac camp prisoners

(Patria) - A commemoration will be held today at the Jasenovac Memorial Area in Croatia on the 79th anniversary of the breakout of the last prisoners of the Jasenovac camp.

The commemoration will begin with a gathering at the Memorial Museum, from where the column of remembrance will head towards the "Flower" monument, where delegations will lay a single flower instead of wreaths.

As announced, the commemoration will be attended by the envoy of the President of Croatia Zoran Milanović, the head of his office Orsat Miljenić, the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Gordan Jandroković, and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who will also lay a wreath at the memorial plaque at the Romani cemetery in Uštica.

In the early morning 78 years ago, on April 22, 1945, the last 600 prisoners launched a breakout from the Jasenovac concentration camp, where the Ustasha authorities imprisoned and killed people based on their religious, national, or ideological affiliation. Only about a hundred prisoners survived the breakout.

Until 1991, the Jasenovac Memorial Area was a single entity, but with the breakup of the SFRY, it was geographically and administratively divided into two independent institutions: the Jasenovac Memorial Area in the Republic of Croatia and the Donja Gradina Memorial Area in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
