Who is lying to whom about sniping Sarajevo: BiH Prosecutor's Office is 'intensifying' media presence because it hasn't done its job for 30 years!

By Amina Čorbo-Zećo

While transparent "euphoria" is growing and awaiting the outcome of the investigation in Italy, the devastating fact that not a single sniper has been prosecuted by the BiH Prosecutor's Office for the murders of civilians, especially children, in besieged Sarajevo remains persistently omitted.

According to data from the Union of War Victims of Sarajevo Canton, during the siege of Sarajevo, which lasted 1,425 days, an average of 329 shells fell on the city every day. During that period, 11,541 civilians were killed, including 1,601 children, while at least 50,000 people were wounded.

At the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Stanislav Galić, former commander of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), was sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorizing the citizens of Sarajevo. His successor in that position, Dragomir Milošević, was sentenced to 29 years in prison.

Former political and military leaders of Republika Srpska, including Radovan Karadžić, who was finally sentenced to life imprisonment, have also been convicted for the campaign of terror against civilians, which included sniper and artillery attacks.

The verdicts of the Hague Tribunal confirmed that the units of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of the VRS deliberately targeted civilians, carrying out an inhumane campaign of terror that lasted more than three and a half years. The goal of this campaign, as established by the verdicts, was to exert pressure on the authorities in Sarajevo.

All those convicted were tried for crimes committed up to the end of 1995, and there were also crimes in 1996. However, none of the direct perpetrators have ever been prosecuted for shelling or sniping Sarajevo citizens.

This is precisely where the essence of the deception lies and the key question that has remained unanswered for years: why has the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite the extensive and detailed documentation from The Hague, never prosecuted the direct perpetrators of these crimes? For this reason, we are publishing parts of the Hague documents, which are also available to the prosecutors of the BiH Prosecutor's Office, and which clearly state the names of the snipers, as well as those who trained and equipped them.

These documents indicate planned organization, precise orders, and official communication in which the Command of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps is informed about the equipment needed to carry out the assigned tasks, which included random killings of civilians and the creation of fear, which is the definition of terrorism.

Thus, documents from 1993 state that Miroslav Krajišnik informed his superiors that the brigade had seven sniper rifles and that the implementation of orders had begun, which included selecting fighters to form a sniper platoon, while training was carried out with the involvement of already active snipers.

One of the documents also contains a list of members of the IDG "Delta" unit, which includes: Miodrag Glavaš (commander), Slobodan Prodan, Radenko Mutabdžija, Željko Trifković, Željko Šakota, Aleksandar Petrić, Duško Marijanović, Zoran Kapetina, Miroslav Lubura, Ranko Garabin, Milidrag Draginić, Sanja Sukara (medical), Mladen Glavina (communications), Vina Milošević (communications), Milka Lojanica (communications), and Gordana Krajišnik (kitchen).

The same members were registered when receiving equipment, and they were allocated a total of 300 sniper rounds. The commander, according to the rules, had to explain what and whom that ammunition was used for – assuming that the BiH Prosecutor's Office was ever interested.

While the BiH Prosecutor's Office, through media close to that institution, persistently assures the public that the long-announced indictment for the siege and terrorization of Sarajevo will soon be filed, the facts say otherwise.

Thirty years after the crimes, with the existence of Hague Tribunal verdicts, detailed military documentation, and clearly identified names of direct perpetrators, the lack of indictments can no longer be justified by the complexity of the case or the passage of time.

The story of the alleged "intensification of the investigation" today does not signify institutional determination, but an admission of decades of inaction. Every new day without an indictment further confirms that the problem is not a lack of evidence, but a lack of will to finally prosecute the sniper terror over Sarajevo before the domestic judiciary. Milanko Kajganić, Chief Prosecutor of the BiH Prosecutor's Office, is obliged to explain what they are doing, or be replaced, as were all his predecessors!

Both BiH institutions and bodies within them must insist on this, rather than acting as auxiliary tools for Italy in the process known as 'Sarajevo safari', which might have been discovered earlier if the BiH Prosecutor's Office had done its job.
