(Patria) - Croatian diplomacy has made it a habit to ignore interstate protocols and disregard BiH institutions. We saw this today in Plenković's avoidance of the BiH Presidency as the highest state authority.
This is an elementary disrespect of a neighboring country and bilateral relations. However, we should not be surprised, this is nothing new, said geopolitical analyst and professor at the International University in Sarajevo, Jahja Muhasilović, in an interview with the Patria News Agency.
Our interlocutor correlated the timing of the visit of high-ranking EU officials – Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte – with the previous night's derogation of the Rules of Procedure of the House of Representatives of the FBiH Parliament, orchestrated by the Troika (SDP BiH, People and Justice, and Our Party) and HDZ BiH.
"In parallel, they also increased these incomes and pensions, purely to satisfy the expectations of the people, so that they would not rebel and so that the Bosniaks would calm down and not react to this diplomatic scandal," said Muhasilović.
By visiting the Rais al-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH, Husein efendi Kavazović, and thereby avoiding a meeting with the members of the BiH Presidency, Croatia sent a message that it considers Bosniaks nothing more than a religious community, that it simply multiplies them by zero and does not consider them a state-building nation, adds Muhasilović.
Muhasilović also notes that the representatives of the Troika, given that they are in power, should have been the first to react to all of this. However, they did not do so because they were imposed precisely to satisfy the demands of Zagreb and the leader of HDZ BiH, Dragan Čović.
"I call on them on this occasion to speak out and condemn such a move by Andrej Plenković," Muhasilović stated.
He emphasizes that Croatia, through certain politicians from HDZ who sit in the European Parliament and European institutions, such as Željana Zovko, who caused a scandal yesterday during her appearance on Federal Television, has been trying for a long time to present itself as the European Union.
"Croatia wants to blackmail Bosnia and Herzegovina and its European path. Our neighbors want to tell us that if their demands are not met, which is the maximization of the rights of BiH Croats at the expense of Bosniaks, they will block our European path. And that was the message they tried to send and have been sending more or less since they became members of the EU," Muhasilović adds.
Muhasilović: The Troika should have reacted
However, he appeals that Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens should not pay too much attention to such threats from Croatia, considering the evident lack of will and desire from Brussels to even admit us to full membership.
"We also saw that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of BiH, Elmedin Konaković, during a staged guest appearance on Face Television, put all of this in the context of us obtaining negotiating status in March.
Konaković misled the BiH public with claims that Croatia must be appeased for us to open negotiations. That has absolutely nothing to do with each other.
Firstly, the European Union clearly does not want us, and the candidate status we received is purely for geopolitical reasons, i.e., due to the events in Ukraine.
Ukraine, where a war is actively being waged, Georgia, and Moldova, countries that do not have a resolved territorial status and in which Russian republics are installed, have de facto skipped us. This shows us the EU's actual stance towards BiH.
All this lying to the people that it is for our European path, all these 'good relations' with Croatia, although they are not good, but rather subservient relations, are just Konaković's deception of the public," Muhasilović concludes in an interview with Patria.
