11 people arrested and detained over tragedy in Novi Sad, including former minister Goran Vesić

(Patria) - The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad announced that a total of 11 people have been arrested and detained in connection with the tragedy in Novi Sad, when the canopy at the railway station in that city collapsed on November 1, killing 14 people, later one more, and two people are in serious condition.

After collecting and analyzing all necessary documentation, conducting interviews with a large number of citizens, and following an expert examination to determine the cause and circumstances of the collapse, which was submitted to the prosecutor's office on November 20, and after reviewing the findings and opinions of construction experts, by order of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad, a total of eleven people were arrested and detained.

Due to reasonable suspicion that they committed the criminal offense of a serious crime against public safety, J.T., G.V., A.D., and N.Š. were deprived of their liberty. Among those arrested is former Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesić.

The suspects: S.N., M.J., Lj.M.M., M.S., D.J., M.G., and D.T. committed the criminal offense of a serious crime against public safety under Article 288, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code in connection with the criminal offense of improper and irregular execution of construction works under Article 281, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code, the statement said.

At the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad, 66 people were previously heard, and it was ordered that five more people be heard.

Dr. Dragan Nikolić, director of the Emergency Center of the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, said on Wednesday that doctors have made progress in treating two seriously injured people pulled from the rubble at the Novi Sad railway station.
