Final Warning to Aleksandar Vučić

(Patria) - The majority political groups in the European Parliament have agreed on the text of a resolution on Serbia, calling for an international investigation into the recent elections, the dispatch of an expert mission, and conditioning further EU financial assistance to Serbia on the improvement of electoral conditions.

The resolution on the situation in Serbia following the elections was voted on today in Strasbourg, at a plenary session of the European Parliament.

The final text was agreed upon by the political groups, and the text will go to a vote without prior debate. The European Parliament debated the situation in Serbia in light of allegations of electoral irregularities back in January.

That debate served as the basis for drafting the final text of the document, which will become the European Parliament's resolution version after the vote, Klix reports.

In addition to calling for an international investigation, the resolution calls on the European Commission and member states to apply "strict conditions and immediately review the pre-accession IPA funds allocated to Serbia, as well as other financial instruments".

"If Serbia does not improve electoral conditions, or if the investigation shows direct involvement of Serbian authorities in electoral fraud, EU funds should be suspended due to a gross violation of the rule of law in the case of the elections," the resolution states.

They also express regret that the alleged "parliamentary and local elections deviate from international standards, due to the systematic abuse of media and institutions by the current authorities, which is why the elections cannot be considered free and fair".

The resolution will be forwarded to the European Commission, the President of the European Council, High Representative Josep Borrell, EU member states, as well as other international institutions.

EP resolutions are not binding, but they represent the expression of the political will of one of the three most important EU institutions.
