Vučić increasingly aware he will not succeed in preventing the adoption of the Srebrenica Genocide Resolution

(Patria) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić spoke today with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres about the Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide.

The Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide is expected to be put to a vote before the UN General Assembly in early May, and official Belgrade opposes it, reports RFE/RL.

Vučić posted on his Instagram that he discussed the Resolution with Guterres, "particularly in light of the important role the UN plays as one of the pillars of international law."

"I reiterated that Serbia is a serious state that uncompromisingly condemns every crime committed in war conflicts, precisely in accordance with the principles and regulations of the UN, which also defined the difference between the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes," Vučić stated.

Despite the rulings of international courts, official Belgrade and the authorities of the BiH entity RS deny that genocide was committed in Srebrenica in July 1995.

The draft Resolution that is to be presented before the UN General Assembly, which RFE/RL had earlier access to, calls, among other things, for the unconditional condemnation of any denial of the Srebrenica genocide, as well as actions that glorify those convicted of war crimes, including those responsible for the Srebrenica genocide.

The initiators of the resolution are Germany and Rwanda, and it would declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide.

Vučić is currently in New York, where he is lobbying against the adoption of this document. He told journalists today that he has so far spoken with officials from more than 80 countries, and that during the day he held meetings with countries from the Asia-Pacific region and "explained all the reasons" why Serbia is against the adoption of the Resolution.

"We will continue the fight, there are results but it is difficult, we are small for the most powerful forces, but you cannot defeat the truth by force and that means a lot to us," Vučić said, adding that he is not optimistic about being able to prevent the passing of the Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague characterized the crime in Srebrenica as genocide in 2007, in which more than 8,000 men and boys from the then UN-protected enclave were killed in July 1995. For these crimes, more than 50 individuals have been sentenced to approximately 700 years in prison.

The ICJ, ruling on Bosnia and Herzegovina's lawsuit, ruled that Serbia was not responsible for the genocide, nor was it an accomplice, but stated that Serbia did nothing to prevent it.
