Vučić spoke with Putin for the first time in almost 2.5 years

(Patria) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić spoke today with Russia's top official Vladimir Putin, and thanked him "for ensuring that Russia secures sufficient quantities of gas for Serbia" this winter.

Serbia faced the Russian invasion of Ukraine completely dependent on gas from Russia. In the meantime, following the example of many EU countries, Serbia has begun working on finding other sources of supply.

However, despite calls from the EU, of which it is a candidate for membership, Serbia refuses to impose sanctions on Russia, and representatives of the authorities in Belgrade maintain ties with the Kremlin.

Vučić announced on his Instagram profile that he had not spoken with Putin for almost two and a half years, and that on October 20, they had a "good, open, long, and substantial conversation".

"I expressed my hope, just as I did two and a half years ago, that Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation," said Vučić.

As he stated in a video published on Instagram, he discussed bilateral, economic, and political issues with Putin. The reason for the conversation was the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade.
