Vučić with O'Brien: I am particularly concerned about the Resolution on the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić spoke today in Belgrade with James O'Brien, Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department.

Among other things, the meeting discussed the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly, where the Resolution on the Srebrenica genocide will be considered.

The resolution would declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.

- You must know that in my country as well, there has been much discussion about our history and the history that affects neighboring countries, as well as other parts of the world, especially in Srebrenica.

I was a young lawyer, working on war crimes investigations. I was part of those who organized the first investigations into the killings in Srebrenica.

That is a crime, but many perpetrators were under investigation, convicted, and that is what the judicial process serves - said O'Brien.

He stated that the team of investigators, who were "seeking the truth," included representatives of the United Nations at the time, as well as from Serbia.

- That is what we do today as well. We must face the truth. We were partners then, and we should continue to be partners in this.

I feel that the main topic of our discussions was precisely how to be partners today as well - said the American official.

He added that the US wants to continue the partnership with Serbia and that "borders play as small a role as possible."

Speaking about the Resolution on Srebrenica, Vučić said that the US and Serbia disagree on that issue as well, and that he is particularly concerned about this resolution because he "knows what it means and how it will damage relations in the region."

- Do not forget, this was brought as a decision of one people against another within BiH. Do not forget that this issue was illegally transferred from the Security Council to the General Assembly, because this matter belongs to the Security Council - added Vučić.

He stated that he knows the US positions and hopes that some of the younger generations in Serbia will pursue a better policy - with "less bitterness and disappointment" than him.

- And what is my obligation is when we lose in the Council of Europe and when we formally lose in the UN... When that happens, we will have to raise our heads and fight for the economic progress of Serbia - stated Vučić.

Answering the question whether talks with American officials could influence Serbia's intention to prevent the adoption of that document, Vučić said that Serbia will oppose the UN as much as it can.
