Drivers in Istria struggle with wild animals jumping onto the road

(Patria) - As many as eleven collisions with game were recorded on Istrian roads over the past weekend, a record number of such cases in Istria, the police announced yesterday.

The first case occurred on the night from Friday to Saturday near Poreč, when a 21-year-old German citizen hit a wild boar with his car, which then fled the scene.

On a state road near the village of Vozilići, in the Labin area, a 72-year-old woman hit a roe deer on Saturday around 12:10 PM, which died at the scene of the accident.

Around 5:40 PM near Poreč, a 49-year-old woman hit a wild boar, which also died at the scene.

On the same day around 7:15 PM on the A9 motorway, a 29-year-old man hit a roe deer with his car, which then fled the scene.

Around 7:25 PM, a 28-year-old woman near Labin hit a herd of wild boars that ran onto the road, and they fled after the impact.

On Sunday, half an hour past midnight near Višnjan, a 45-year-old man hit a wild boar, which died at the scene.

Two hours later, two collisions with roe deer occurred, one on the D44 road near Lupoglav involving a 38-year-old man, and another near Cerovlje involving a 47-year-old woman. In both cases, the game died.

On the same day in the afternoon near Marčana, a 20-year-old man hit a wild boar, which subsequently died.

Then near the village of Žužići in the Poreč area, a 27-year-old man hit a roe deer, which subsequently died, and on a road near Novigrad, a 38-year-old man hit a wild boar, which subsequently died.

To prevent such and similar incidents, the Istrian police warn drivers to pay attention to the appearance of game on roads outside settlements, especially on road sections where traffic signs visibly warning drivers of game are placed.

At the same time, the police remind that the driver of a vehicle involved in a collision with an animal on the road is liable in accordance with the Road Traffic Safety Act, if it is determined that the collision occurred due to a violation of traffic regulations, i.e., if they were driving at an inappropriate speed.
