(Patria) - The Government of Montenegro has not yet made a decision on co-sponsoring the United Nations (UN) Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica.
Dozens of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and public figures requested on April 16 that the Government be a co-sponsor of the resolution, which is also supported by the majority of the opposition in the Montenegrin parliament.
The Government held a session on April 18 in the meantime, but did not put the NGO initiative on the agenda.
The Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, confirmed in parliament the following day that the executive branch has not yet taken a position on the issue.
The initiative was supported, among others, by former Minister of European Affairs Jovana Marović and member of the Judicial Council Miodrag Iličković.
Meanwhile, one-third of the Members of Parliament of the Assembly of Montenegro have supported the NGO initiative – the opposition Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Social Democrats (SD), and the Bosniak Party.
The DPS stated that "a clear stance on genocide is not a matter of political duty".
The resolution, initiated by Germany and Rwanda, calls for July 11 to be declared the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica.
