Fire engulfs Vjesnik skyscraper in Zagreb, firefighters' battle lasts all night

(Patria) - A fire broke out in the Vjesnik skyscraper on Slavonska Avenue in Zagreb on Monday evening around 11:10 PM. As it spread vertically, it engulfed several floors and the roof, leading to a large number of firefighters being involved in extinguishing it. At the time the fire broke out, according to current information, there was no one in the building.

93 firefighters with 30 vehicles are extinguishing the fire, and this morning they managed to enter the building itself.

"The fire is still active and spreading through structural openings. Due to increased danger, firefighters have been withdrawn from internal assault operations," announced the Public Fire Department of the City of Zagreb.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

"As soon as we saw the open flames, we immediately requested additional intervention. It is dangerous because, as the teams began to climb and extinguish, we saw that the fire began to appear on the lower floors, even on the ground floor, which means it was spreading through ventilation," said Siniša Jembrih, commander of the Public Fire Department of the City of Zagreb, and added:

"All firefighters of the City of Zagreb were at this fire. It is to be expected that we will bring the fire under control during the day. But it will take time," he said.
