Early Parliamentary Elections in Kosovo on June 7

(Patria) - Acting President of Kosovo Albulena Haxhiu yesterday called early parliamentary elections for June 7.

These will be the third elections in just over a year, and they were called after the Kosovo parliament failed to elect a new head of state.

The new elections extend the political crisis in Europe's youngest country, whose government was not fully functional for most of last year because the divided parliament could not elect a parliamentary speaker for months.

- We are delaying reforms for no reason. We can no longer afford to waste time - said Haxhiu, acting president of the state and parliament, after a meeting with political leaders.

Deputies had until Tuesday midnight to elect a president after Vjosa Osmani's term expired earlier this month.

Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti failed to secure support for his candidate.

After a convincing victory in December, it seemed that Kurti's Vetevendosje party would be ready to break the months-long political deadlock.
