(Patria) - During exploratory archaeological works at the site of the future new Vinkovci City Market, archaeologists have found 22 Roman graves, it was confirmed today by the City Administration.
"Archaeological works within the project to completely renovate the open-air market began yesterday. Archaeologists have already found 22 Roman graves, which they assume date between the 2nd and 3rd centuries," announced the Mayor of Vinkovci, Josip Romić, on Facebook.
Romić states that, according to all indicators, the Roman Cibalae, which were located on the territory of today's Vinkovci, were among the hundred most significant and largest cities of the Roman Empire.
"This is exceptional if we consider that this vast empire spanned three continents and five million square kilometers. Therefore, it is not surprising that our Vinkovci is today one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe," wrote Romić.
Archaeological research is being carried out as part of the reconstruction, renovation, and equipping project of the open-air City Market in Vinkovci, worth 3.8 million euros.
