(Patria) - Serbia is observing a Day of Mourning today for the tragedy that occurred early Monday at a nursing home on the outskirts of Belgrade. The Serbian government decided this yesterday.
In the fire that broke out at the "Ivanović" home for adults and the elderly, in Belgrade's Barajevo municipality, eight people died, while seven residents were injured.
A 48-hour detention has been ordered for three suspects in connection with the fire.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced that the responsible person G.I. (52), as well as A.I. (52) and M.I. (29), have been brought in on suspicion of committing a criminal act against general safety, which carries a prison sentence of two to 12 years.
The Prosecutor's Office stated that there are grounds for suspicion that the fire was started by one of the home's residents, who also perished.
The "Ivanović" home for adults and the elderly renewed its operating license in 2021, which is valid until 2027, according to data from the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs.
However, data from the National Bank of Serbia show that the accounts of this company have been blocked since 2020.
