Police officer killed in a cafe in northwestern Croatia

(Patria) - A shooting occurred this morning in a cafe in the town of Krapina in northwestern Croatia.

The Krapina-Zagorje Police Administration confirmed that a 52-year-old man fatally shot a 52-year-old police officer with a firearm, who was off-duty at the time.

He then shot himself with a firearm and was transported by helicopter to KB Dubrava.

The condition of the attacker is currently unknown.

A criminal investigation and on-site inspection to determine all circumstances of this event are underway.

Index.hr reports that the head of the Criminal Police Service at the Krapina-Zagorje Police Administration, Robert Grilec, was killed.

The portal Zagorje international spoke with a witness, Dorijan Švaljek, a waiter at the cafe, who saw everything.

- The man came in with a gun, turned towards him and shot him three times, then went outside and shot himself.

There was no argument, nothing at all... He just came into the cafe and shot - said Švaljek, who quickly hid in the storage room at the time.

There were about 15 people in the cafe at the time, he says. Everyone scattered instantly.

- It was terrible. I hid in the storage room for about 10 minutes until the police arrived - added the waiter.

His colleague Viktorija Žižak was taking an order from the deceased at that very moment.

- He killed him in front of my eyes. He shot him three times without a word. He just pointed the gun and shot. Then he turned his gaze towards me, and I ran into the storage room - said Žižak.
