Tragedy in Novi Sad: Canopy collapses at the railway station, casualties and injuries reported

(Patria) - At least one person died in the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad. There are many injured, and the portal nova.rs reports that there are more than 30 people. Namely, under the canopy there were benches and a large number of citizens were sitting on them at the moment of the fall.

The accident occurred today shortly before 12:00. A large number of ambulances are on the scene. There are excavators and heavy machinery trying to clear the collapsed part of the building. Firefighters and the Gendarmerie are also on site.

This building was first renovated in 2021, and after a few months, renovation of the same station building began again. It was officially opened on July 5 this year.

The Mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, arrived at the railway station.

"I express my deep regret that this tragedy happened in Novi Sad. City services are fully at the disposal of the competent state services. In accordance with all procedures, after the investigative authorities conduct an investigation, we will inform the public about further steps. The city is in constant contact with the competent authorities and is taking all necessary steps. At this moment, all our attention is focused on providing assistance to everyone affected by this accident," said the Mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, for RTV.

President Aleksandar Vučić also headed to the scene, and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić arrived as well.

The investigation is being led by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad.
