Tagesschau: Serbian President Celebrates Himself, Belgrade Center Resembles a Fair

(Patria) - Protests in Serbia continue - because of this, President Aleksandar Vučić organized a major event.

In front of about 55,000 people, he celebrated his government and his personality, the German news television service Tagesschau reported.

"The center of Belgrade this weekend resembles a folk fair. A street about one kilometer long is closed. Stands under white tents are set up on the left and right of the road. Three stages have been erected.

Music is currently playing, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is expected to appear in the evening," the German television reported on Saturday, conveying the atmosphere from Belgrade.

The television reminds that the Serbian president had been announcing a great movement for three years, which he says is now forming in the midst of the biggest crisis he has experienced since coming to power.

"He promoted the rally for days in the media and on his social media channels.

Posters with the large inscription 'We will not give up Serbia' are hanging at the event site. What exactly that means, a supporter of Vučić cannot explain.

The president himself formulated it in a pathetic television speech on the pro-government channel TV Pink: 'A Serb does not give his country to anyone - and will never allow it to be destroyed.

Thank you very much. Thank you for all your love and support,'" Tagesschau reported.

The television reminds that Vučić accused those demonstrating for months of being influenced by foreign powers from abroad, without being specific.

"In an interview for Pink TV, he indirectly threatens them with revenge, and quite directly with criminal prosecution: 'You will be held accountable.'

Despite his rejection by students, Vučić's folk fair this weekend strangely resembles student demonstrations. Tractors are parked along the road to show broad support from the rural population.

Women in folk costumes are distributing food. Tractors also frequently appeared during the student protests. The population regularly supplied the students, who often traveled half the country on foot or by bicycle to reach the protests," the German TV service noted the unusual similarity.
